The persevering face emoji shows the emoji’s face scrunched up in exertion: the eyes are closed tight and close together, the eyebrows clearly visible, and the mouth stretching downwards. In some versions, such as with Samsung, the mouth looks like it could be mid-cry. It’s used when something is difficult, whether it be a situation, a circumstance or a conversation, and the sender is trying to persevere through it. It can also be used in a Homer Simpson-esque “D’oh!” moment! Most frequently, though, it’s used when the sender is completely overwhelmed by the conversation and is having difficulty understanding or following.
